Hurricane Katrina Disaster
Under the direction of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, California has provided substantial resources to the Gulf Coast to assist in the Hurricane Katrina Disaster and continues to be available to provide additional resources as requests are made by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. To this end, OES activated the State Operations Center on Thursday and is in contact with the states of Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi and Florida to identify any additional needs that California might be able to meet through proper channels.

OES is attempting to track all emergency management resources being sent from California to ensure enough resources are retained within the state for adequate response and recovery in the event of a disaster here.

WHAT WE'RE DOING
The Governor's Office of Emergency Services has been coordinating the movement of resources to the Gulf States, while ensuring adequate resources within the state in the event of a disaster here. OES is also coordinating with city, county, state and federal agencies as well as non-profit and private entities in preparing to receive and support evacuated Huricane Katrina survivors. FEMA has indicated it is not sending evacuees to California, at this time. If that changes, FEMA will make a request through OES. California remains ready to receive and support evacuees for longer-term housing than is normally provided in evacuation shelters following a disaster. We recognize that many survivors are coming to California on their own or through other means. There are assistance centers established to provide them with information about services available to them. At maximum deployment, there were nearly 2,000 Californians sent to the Gulf States.

Develop a Family Disaster Plan
September is Disaster Preparedness Month. Families need to be ready for emergencies at home, at work and while on vacation.
Know your risks, pack an emergency supply kits for every member of your family, and ensure everyone knows what to do in the event of an emergency. That includes having a communications plan when local phone lines are overwhelmed and a place to meet if separated.
Obtain brochures and tip sheets at "Be Smart, Be Responsible, Be Prepared. Be Ready" and at "Emergency Preparedness for Home and Business."
